MSc Program in Civil Engineering

Reykjavik University offers programs leading to the MSc degree in Civil Engineering in four different fields of specialization:

Construction Management with an emphasis on interdisciplinary cooperation with RU´s  School of Law and School of Business.  Main subjects of study are:   Construction Management, Cost Engineering, Project Management, Scheduling, Facilities Management, Operations Analysis and Management , Risk Analysis, Value Engineering, Logistics, Legal Aspects in the Building Sector, Organizational Psychology and Human Resource Management. Structural Design with an emphasis on the interaction of engineering and architecture, the interaction of  building materials and design, as well as structural analysis and specialized aspects of the physics of buildings.  There is also a major emphasis on innovation in the search for technical solutions and the development of new methods and sustainable solutions in the design of structures and in the use of building materials. Concrete Technology which is taught entirely in English.  The program is run in cooperation with the IBRI Rheo Center of Excellence. The majority of the students are foreign MSc, PhD or post-doc students.  Students who choose this line of specialization graduate with the degree Master of Science in Concrete Technology.  Course Catalog.

Transport and Urban Planning with an emphasis on urban planning, transport planning and engineering, road design and sustainable approaches. Course Catalog.

 

The Study Program

The program  is highly ambitious with an emphasis on students´ practically oriented project work  and applied research,  in cooperation with leading foreign universities and enterprises in the building industry.  Flexibility and personal choice characterize the program, as each student makes his individual study plan under the guidance of RU´s professors. 
Rules for the MSc Program

The program takes 2 years to complete (120 ECTS) for students that have formerly completed a 3 year bachelor´s program of 180 ECTS.  A full study load is 30 ECTS per semester.  The program is concluded with a research based master´s thesis of 30 or 60 ECTS.  Students are encouraged to take a part of their studies at a foreign university on the basis of student exchange programs.

Applications

Applicants should have completed a BSc degree in Civil Engineering with good grades from a recognized university.  Documents that should be sent with the application are a confirmed transcript of the student´s grades and examination certificate, two letters of recommendation and the student´s Mission Statement.
