The First Step to University Education
The School of Science and Engineering offers a program of Preliminary Studies. The main objective is to prepare students, who have a vocational training and/or sufficient practical experience in industry, with the knowledge and competence necessary for further studies in the School of Science and Engineering .
The Department of Preliminary Studies also offers courses in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics for those who have a matriculation examination but need more preparation particularly in Mathematics and Physics before entering university studies at the School of Science and Engineering.
The students in the Department of Preliminary Studies are individuals with different educational background; people with vocational training, practical experience in industry or students who already have a matriculation examination. The studies are both practical and demanding, designed for the hard working and ambitious student.
There are more applications for enrolment than can be accepted. The program of Preliminary Studies takes up to two years, depending on the applicants´ prior education. All instruction is in day-school. The teaching is planned as a modular system. Each subject is divided into modules of 3 credits. The school-year is divided into two terms, each lasting 15 weeks or 75 teaching days, the final examinations not included. All subjects are taught each term. The subjects are: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Icelandic, Danish, English, German, History of Ideas and Computer literacy.
The teachers in the Department of Preliminary Studies are ambitious to provide their students with first class education. Recently the department received a grant from the Socrates /Grundtvig 2 plan for a preparatory visit to Denmark in order to initiate a cooperation with a Danish and a German school at the same level to compare and develop further the curriculum for adult educational programs. The Department of Preliminary Studies has also had Socrates/Comenius language assistants in Danish, English and German.
