RU graduates have the option of purchasing library cards. The cards cost 2.500 ISK and are valid for one year.

Beverages

Bottled water or water in a closed container is allowed inside the library. That also goes for coffee in a cup which contains a lid. Remember not to leave behind empty containers in work areas!

 

Bookstore
Outlet from the Student Bookstore at Sæmundargata (on the University of Iceland campus) is at Nautholsvik selling textbooks from RU reading lists.

 

C
Citing sources

RefWorks is a web based reference management tool offered by LIRU. The program enables users to manage references, cite them within text, and prepare a reference list in accordance with acceptible standards such as APA or the requirements of specific journals. Sources can be registered into RefWorks or they can be transferred into the program from databases.

There´s also access to EndNote Web.

 

Classification system
LIRU classifies all printed material and arranges it on the library shelves according to the Dewey system (Dewey Decimal Classification system [DDC]). Information on the classification number of works can be found in the library system, Gegnir, by viewing their location (the column, “Call no.”). An overview of main categories can be seen on shelves within the library and on the library web.

 

Collections
The role of LIRU is to support and strengthen the creation and dissemination of knowledge at RU by providing diverse services to researchers, instructors, and students. The purchase of material by the library is conducted in accordance with this role. LIRU only acquires material which pertains to RU's fields of study. The largest part of the library's collections is in electronic format, but printed material is also collected with an emphasis on careful selection in collaboration with departments. Collections are primarily in English and Icelandic.

Databases

Access to databases subscribed to by LIRU varies in accordance with agreements with publishers. Access can be tied to a password, to RU-net, to all computers in Iceland, or only to computers in the library. Note that subscribed databases have an accompanying symbol which indicates the access type:
[+] = access from RU net (IP addresses) and remote access
[*] = passwords
[#] = country-wide access, all computers in Iceland
[~] = only access from RU net (IP addresses)
[!] = access from computers in RU library

Dictionaries
LIRU offers its users a good range of dictionaries in the library. Dictionaries are a part of LIRU's Reference Book Library and are not loaned out unless agreed to by the reception desk employee. LIRU also offers many electronic dictionaries which people are encouraged to look at. See: Dictionaries

Essays
Copies of all final essays are stored in the Reserve Library. The copies are either stored in the Reserve Library or in storage and are only loaned out for reading within the library. Essays are searchable in the library system, Gegnir. An exception from this rule are final essays of MBA students which the library does not hold copies of.

 

F
Final essays

Copies of all final essays are stored at LIRU. The copies are either stored in the Reserve Library or in storage and are only loaned out for reading within the library. Food
Eating is NOT allowed within the library, neither in the reading facilities nor in work rooms. Library employees are encouraged to point this rule out to guests which is in accordance with the school's general rules of conduct.

 

G
GSM / Mobile Phones

Library guests are asked not to use mobile phones while inside the library and employees have been asked to point this out to guests when needed. Engaging in phone calls within the reading facilities is not allowed. Please show consideration to other library guests as hearing people talking on the phone can be an annoying distraction.

Held items

Held items are kept for borrowers for one week after they are notified of their availability.

 

History
The Library and Information Services of RU (LIRU) were formally opened in January of 1999 by then Minister of Education, Björn Bjarnason. From the beginning, the library's supervisors have tried to make as much use of information technology as possible in developing the library which is largely electronic today. The director of the library until 2001 was Sólveig Þorsteinsdóttir. In 2003, the operation of the European Documentation Centre (EDC) was begun at the library. The Centre is built on an agreement between the Executive Board of the European Union and the European Law Institute of RU. Guðrún Tryggvadóttir has served as director of LIRU from 2001.

Journals

LIRU subscribes to approximately 20.000 journals in all RU's fields of study. Most of these journals are in electronic form. Printed journals can NOT be borrowed. L
Laptops

Booths which contain computers are not intended for the use of people with laptops. Students should furthermore note that computer booths are not reading facilities.

Library cards
RU students and staff members do not need a library card. Students in Continuing Education and former RU students do however need to purchase a library card if they wish to borrow material from LIRU's collections. The cost of a library card valid for one year is 2.500 ISK.

 

Library system
Using LIRU's library system, Gegnir, students can get information about what is available in print both at LIRU and at other Icelandic libraries, in addition to getting information about what material is available and what is out on loan. By signing in (see My Info in Gegnir), users can view information about their own loans, extend them, and place materials on hold. The reception desk employee can give further information on My Info in Gegnir.

Students can generally keep books on loan for four weeks. Held items are kept for borrowers for one week after they are notified of their availability. M
Material from other libraries

RU students and staff can request that LIRU provide them with material from other libraries, domestic or foreign. All further information regarding these services can be found on the library homepage.

Overdue loans
LIRU sends claims to students and faculty exclusively to their RU e-mail address. The loan period of material is stated on the receipt given to borrowers, but borrowers can also get information on loan periods by going to My Info in Gegnir. Note that receipts do not accompany books on loan from the Reserve Library as those books are only loaned out for use within the library and are to be returned on the same day as they were borrowed. If borrowers ignore the loan period of items and do not address recall notices, LIRU has permission to remove them from the list of registered borrowers until the material in question has been returned.

 

P
Passwords

Information on passwords to databases to which LIRU subscribes can be found by clicking an icon (a yellow lock) on the homepage of databases in the electronic library. Note that according to agreements which LIRU has with the owners and publishers of databases, the passwords are only intended for RU students and staff members. It is therefore wholly prohibited to make them accessible to people outside RU.

 

Photocopying
A copier is situated in the library at Ofanleiti. Cards for the copier can be purchased at the reception desk at a cost of 1.000 ISK or 2.000 ISK (100 or 200 copies). Added to the price of people's first card is a deposit in the amount of 100 ISK which is paid back if the empty card is returned to the reception desk. A card can also be borrowed from the reception desk employee in which case only individual copies are paid for.

 

R
Reading facilities

The LIRU libraries at Nautholsvik and Ofanleiti have fine reading facilities. The arrangement, “first come, first served”, applies in the facilities and tables can not be reserved. Employees are allowed to clear tables which have not been used for more than an hour. An emphasis is placed on peace and quiet within the reading facilities, and on students being able to concentrate on their studies without the disturbance of phone calls and chatter. Computers can be used within the reading facilities as long as other guests do not have any complaints. General RU rules of conduct apply regarding the handling of food and drinks within the reading facilities: No food is allowed, but students are allowed to have beverages on the condition that they are kept in a closed container.

 

RefWorks, bibliographic management tool

Return of material
The return date of material is specified on the receipt which accompanies loans. Generally, the loan period of books is four weeks.

Scanner
The photocopy machine is a combined copy machine and a scanner.

 

Study material
All RU instructors can send a request to LIRU regarding purchase of material they need for their courses. In addition to copies of textbooks, such further reading is kept in the Reserve Library to ensure equal access. Instructors can also request that specific books from the library be kept in the Reserve Library. Instructors can determine the arrangement for loaning out such material. Other material which instructors submit to the Reserve Library are, for example, articles, case studies, and critiques. Textbooks

The Reserve Library is situated at the reception desk at LIRU, Nautholsvik and Ofanleiti. Books marked as belonging to it in Gegnir are located at the reception desk. The Reserve Library contains copies of all textbooks used in undergraduate programmes during the current semester, in addition to selected books used in graduate programmes. The books are only loaned out for use within the library.
