Some Q&A related to the RU's buildings
Where do I get / purchase / pay for ...
All sale to students of, for example, access cards, software (campus-discs), memory sticks, printing quota, and reading material from instructors takes place in the main reception on the 1st floor in Nauthólsvík (no longer in the library) and in the main reception at Ofanleiti. The main receptions will also handle academic records through Teaching Affairs and Registry as well as certificates. They will furthermore tend to other general reception services as before.
The student bookstore will sell books and stationery in a room located on the left after walking through the main entrance on the 1st floor in Nauthólsvík. Opening hours will be from 11:00 to 16:30 on weekdays.
Until next summer, there will be four receptions at the university:
- one main reception is on the 5th floor at Ofanleiti which tends to everything in that location
- the main reception in Nauthólsvík is on the 1st floor right by the entrance
- a reception for the RU library, Student Services, and the International Office is on the 2nd floor in the section, Mars
- and a reception for School offices, other support departments, and the Rector is on the 3rd floor in Mars.
- Finally, a special reception for the IT Department is located on the 2nd floor in Mars.
At what times are the buildings open?
In Ofanleiti the building is open 7:15 – 19:15. After that you need an access card. The reception in Ofanleiti (5th floor) is open 8 - 16.
In Nauthólsvík the building is open 7:15 – 19:15. After that you need an access card. The reception in Nauthólsvík (by the main entrance) is open 8 - 17.
How do I get an access card?
You can get your access card in the receptions in Ofanleiti or Nauthólsvík.
The card gives access to all the school's buildings. You have to upload a photograph of you to the MySchool intranet for the card to be issued.
Older access cards and access codes are still valid for the new building.
How do I locate the numbered rooms?
Rooms in Ofanleiti have a three figure number, sometimes with the letter O in front, e.g. O-101. The first figure gives the floor number. Information signs by the elevators show directions within each floor.
In the new building the numbers are of the format M.1.01. The letter represents sections, initially only Venus and Mars are applicable. When standing in the main hallway (Jörð/Earth) the Venus section is on your left when your back is to the centre of the building.
The letter is followed by the floor number (here 1, for ground floor) and finally a number representing location within the floor (here 01).
How do I get by bus to Nauthólsvík?
You can use bus routes no. 16 and 19 to travel to Nauthólsvík. The bus stop is in front of the building, by the unfinished centre.
There are bus trips every 15 minutes from Hlemmur with a stop at old Hringbraut/Landspítali hospital. Employees and students are encouraged to make as much use of public transport as possible. The City of Reykjavík is significantly improving public transport to the university which makes its use important.
What route can I take when driving to the new building?
You can drive either Nauthólsvegur—which leads from Hringbraut opposite the Central Bus Terminal— or Flugvallarvegur will be the only accessible route to start with. Traffic density is significantly reduced if students can carpool with two or more per vehicle.
Where can I park?
Parking spaces for employees and students are located to the north of the building. The spaces are accessible from the so-called Menntasveigur which comes right after the roundabout.
A special parking lot is located right next to the university which is only intended for guests and those individuals who carpool with two or more per vehicle. By doing this, RU wants to encourage employees and students to share cars, which contributes to protecting the environment and to minimising traffic en route to the university.
Where is the entrance?
The main entrance to the university—on a temporary basis or until the summer—will be located on the east side of the building by the roots of Öskjuhlíð.
That is the side furthest to your left when you approach the building from the city center.
How do I find my way around the new building?
You can receive a map of the building in the receptions which will make it easier to find one's way. The map clearly shows where all classrooms, laboratories, and service units are located.
The majority of the classrooms are on the ground floor, as well as reception, and other services. The offices of employees are mostly on the third floor.
